as stated earlier i'm consolidating the design blog with this one, so here is another one of my recent projects -
(fotos suck)...
"DEFENDIN THE FENDA"
"hey wally..."
"whaddoyawant?"
"look at this!"
...so there it was, a nineteenth century, solid brass fender, that was obviously commissioned for an extremely large fireplace. American made, albeit with the talents of Europeans that would only ever-after refer to themselves & their families as Americans, at least until recently.
well... what do ya do with it???
of coarse when i first saw it its overall luster was exactly like this:
(i will, if you are all nice, do a separate post on cleaning metals...)
"ENTER NYC GARBAGE.. HAND-HEWN KINGSIZE BEDFRAME" -
this is it already cut up..
found this on E18th., i think its alder with a lacquer that i'm not familiar with. every piece (even the slats), were hand stamped with tool marks so the frame would fit together properly...
AGAIN: hand-hewn
(somebody must've been naughty for this bed to be trashed!)
UPSIDEDOWN FENDER + UPSIDEDOWN BEDFRAME =
BENCH!!!
seen here assembled, awaiting its finish.
there was a lot of carpentry involved in this project, i even had to make my own mitre-box.
(i wish i had taken more fotos).
COMPLETED & IN PLACE
i'm sure i would have preferred a more natural finish and indeed the original lacquer i found very pleasing, however, a client is: "The Client".
the rust coloured mohair is lovely though...
this fireplace is totally functional; the chic just don't burn fires in NYC anymore, (except for perhaps one holiday fire).
